Charles Montague Bakewell was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on April 24, 1867. He moved with his family to California in 1886, where he received his M.A. from the University of California in 1891. He received his Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1894. Bakewell taught philosophy at Harvard, 1896-1897; at the University of California, 1897-1898 and 1903-1905; at Bryn Mawr College, 1898-1900; and at Yale University, 1905-1933.
